Halloween in the Park on Friday

Contact: Officer Richard West |

The Wichita Police Department (WPD) is sponsoring the fifth annual Halloween in the Park safety event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Cypress Park, 350 S. Edgemoor (north of the Patrol East Bureau substation). WPD is partnering with HCA Wesley Medical Center and other local sponsors to host the free event.

Elementary age children and their parents are invited to trick or treat in a safe environment and learn safety tips from Wichita Police officers and other public safety personnel. Children will receive a free bear at Wesley’s Teddy Bear Clinic, view emergency medical equipment and interact with hospital staff. There will be a variety of vehicles on display including police cars, an ambulance, a fire truck and other emergency vehicles. Children can also decorate a Krispy Kreme doughnut and enjoy food provided by Outback Steakhouse and other surprises. WPD offers the following Halloween safety tips:

  • Carry a flashlight
  • Walk, don’t run
  • Stay on sidewalks. If no sidewalk is present, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic
  • Obey traffic signals
  • Watch for cars
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods
  • Only approach houses that have porch lights on
  • Don’t cut across yards or driveways
  • Wear a watch which can be read in the dark
  • Wear costumes that don’t drag on the ground
  • Wear shoes and costume footwear that fit properly
  • Take off masks while walking from house to house
  • Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape
  • Carry safe props with costumes
  • Stay away from/don’t pet unfamiliar animals
  • Never eat anything until an adult inspects the treats
  • Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult
