Bus Shelter Ribbon-Cutting

Ceremony supports 2nd Saturday Shopping Day

A ribbon-cutting for custom-designed bus shelters is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday at Douglas and Chautauqua in the Southwest corner of the Dillons parking lot.

Sponsored by the City of Wichita Transit Department and Douglas Design District, the ribbon-cutting is being held in conjunction with 2nd Saturday, a new event promoting shopping along Douglas in the Delano District, Downtown, Old Town and Douglas Design District. Participating stores will have discounts for those who purchase a 2nd Saturday bag for $5. More information on 2nd Saturday can be found at

The shelter installed at Douglas and Chautauqua is the first of seven custom designed shelters going in along Douglas from Washington to Hillside. The other six shelters will be installed within the next month. Mike Vinson, Director of Wichita Transit, said: “The shelters will give a greater transit presence along Douglas and riders will appreciate the shelters as they wait for the bus to arrive.”

Tri Mark Signworks is building and installing the shelters based on a conceptual design provided by the Douglas Design District. Wichita Transit is using federal grant funds to pay for the shelters. The shelter installations represent the first recommended improvement of the Douglas Design District Streetscape Improvement Plan. The shelters characterize the creative aspect of the Douglas Design District and recognize the history of transit along Douglas while providing important amenities to current and future transit riders.

The City of Wichita and Douglas Design District would like to recognize Dillons for providing donuts and bagels and The Spice Merchant for providing coffee at the ribbon cutting event.
