WPD, Public Works Team Up To Reduce Thefts

Contact: Captain Kenneth Atnip |

With the holiday shopping season approaching, the Wichita Police Department (WPD) and the Department of Public Works & Utilities are working together to reduce property thefts. The two departments will place portable message signs similar to construction zone signs near east and west Wichita shopping areas today. The flashing message boards will be in place on Rock Road near Towne East Square and on West Maple near Towne West Square. The message encourages shoppers to “Hide your items, take your keys and lock your vehicle.”

“This is a busy time of year for thieves,” Captain Kenneth Atnip said. “By giving shoppers these important tips, we hope to prevent vehicular break-ins in shopping areas. Remember, reducing crime is everyone’s business.”

Later in December, the signs will be moved to other shopping areas in Wichita.  The signs will operate 24-hours a day and will remain in place through Monday, Dec. 29. This is the fourth consecutive year WPD and Public Works have placed the signs near busy shopping areas.
