Council Member Williams joins leadership of National Black Caucus

DENVER -- Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer was reelected Saturday to a second term on the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors during the annual NLC 2010 Congress of Cities & Exposition in Denver, CO.

Wichita also won another leadership post with the election of Council Member Lavonta Williams as assistant secretary of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), one of several constituent groups within the NLC’s governance structure.

Council Member Williams was also honored with the NLC Bronze Certificate in recognition of her extensive leadership training.

Wichita’s presence on the NLC governing board was first established by former Mayor Bob Knight, who served on the board and also as president of the NLC in 1999.

“It is an honor to be selected by my fellow locally-elected officials to help guide the National League of Cities during this critical point in our nation’s history,” Mayor Brewer said. “Local governments are the foundation of our country’s democratic tradition. Our example of effective and efficient leadership can help restore the public’s trust in government and rejuvenation of our struggling economy.”

Mayor Brewer and fellow City Council members Jeff Longwell, Sue Schlapp, Paul Gray, Lavonta Williams and Janet Miller are participating in a variety of general session and workshop meetings during the Nov. 30-Dec. 4 conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. More than 4,000 elected officials and staff from across the nation are attending the conference.

The 2010 Congress of Cities & Exposition includes daily general sessions featuring nationally-known experts on issues of importance to cities. More than 30 workshops will cover topics from urban blight and economic development.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
