WFD Urges Caution

The Wichita Fire Department is encouraging residents to be careful with their smoking materials.  Four fire fatalities have occurred in Wichita this year, two of those have been attributed to careless smoking. In addition, careless smoking may have played a role in causing the City’s most recent fire death on Dec 12th at 508 N. Edwards.

Last year one of three fire deaths in the city was due to careless smoking, with the other two caused by unattended cooking.

Careless smoking is the number one cause of preventable home fire deaths. It doesn't take long for a lit cigarette to turn into a raging house fire.  The Wichita Fire Department encourages residents to follow these safety tips:

  • Put cigarettes out completely.
  • Don’t leave cigarettes, cigars or pipes burning unattended.
  • Do not smoke in bed.
  • Do not smoke around medical oxygen.
  • Always use deep ashtrays to discard ashes.

Additional information regarding fire safety can be obtained by calling the Fire Prevention Office at 268-4441.
