Today, Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams discussed the state of community safety for 2010. During his annual briefing with the media Chief Williams discussed efforts to ensure the community’s safety and security, traffic related matters and the department’s 2011 emphasis.
The City of Wichita, for a second consecutive year, continues to experience a decrease in major crime. In addition, the Wichita Police Department posted exceptional major crimes clearance rates. Chief Williams stated, “The Wichita Police Department community policing commitment, which focuses on crime prevention, public outreach, building collaborative partnerships and problem solving continued to be key factors to the department success throughout 2010.”
Among some of the challenges encountered in 2010 were a slight increase in the burglary rate of 4% during 2010 and a concerning increase in traffic fatalities with 29 in 2010, compared to 21 in 2009. These areas, as well as continued emphasis on community policing, will lead the way for our goals in 2011.
