WPD Tests Body-Mounted Cameras

The Wichita Police Department (WPD) is currently testing a new body camera system, WPD Capt. Jeff Easter announced on Wednesday.

The AXON camera, which was developed by Taser, is worn head-high, similar to a Bluetooth phone. Officers can mount it on their head, hat or eyewear. The camera moves with the officer, giving police the capability to record a 110-degree field of view.

The four-week evaluation period, which will last until Feb. 24, will help WPD officials evaluate effectiveness and costs, Easter said.

“We’re testing to see if the cameras help officers do their jobs,” he said. “Anytime we can accurately record incidents, it makes our job easier and more complete.”

The Wichita Police Department already deploys dash mounted cameras in traffic enforcement cars. The body camera system is being tested as an additional tool.
