Wichita City Council Member Sue Schlapp has been named as one of three Wichitans to the board of directors of the newly-formed Kansas Arts Foundation.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback introduced the board during a Monday afternoon news conference in his Statehouse office as he signed an Executive Reorganization Order (ERO) abolishing the Kansas Arts Commission and transferring its responsibilities to the Kansas Historical Society.

Joining Council Member Schlapp on the nine-member board are fellow Wichitans Paula Downing and Priscilla O”Shaughnessy.

The Foundation, established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will now take the lead in  fundraising and promotion for the arts community in Kansas. The abolishment of the Arts Commission will result in a savings of $600,000 for the 2012 state budget, the Governor said.

“Under the leadership of its board of directors, I am confident that the Kansas Arts Foundation will flourish as a private entity and it will continue to promote the beauty that is Kansas and created by Kansans,” the Governor said.

Council Member Schlapp and several members of the Kansas Arts Foundation board of directors stood with the Governor in his office as he signed the ERO document.

“It’s extremely exciting to be asked to participate in this innovative approach to promoting arts in the State of Kansas,” Council Member Schlapp said. “We have a unique opportunity to set an example for the entire country, demonstrating that a privately-organized arts advocacy group can bring great results.”

Also serving on the Foundation board are Bruce Breckenridge, Leawood;; Kerry Livgren, Berryton; Virginia Crossland-Macha, Iola; Bob Swain, Topeka; Linda Browning Weiss, Manhattan, and Chris Burger, Lawrence, legal counsel.
