Mayor, Council Members to Attend National League of Cities Conference

Contact: Dale Goter, Government Relations Manager |

Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and five City Council members will join nearly 50 Kansas local officials at the annual Congressional City Conference March 12-16 in Washington, D.C.

The Congressional City Conference is the annual legislative meeting of the National League of Cities, designed to inform municipal leaders about federal policy issues while providing an opportunity for city leaders to bring local concerns to their federal elected officials.

More than 1,500 local leaders will meet with experts to discuss education and issues important to youth and families. Conference sessions will focus on education reform, combating youth violence, job creation and immigrant integration.

Joining Mayor Brewer will be Council members Sue Schlapp, Paul Gray, Lavonta Williams, Janet Miller and Roger Smith.

Along with interacting with fellow local officials during the annual conference, the Wichita contingent will also spend time with the area’s Congressional delegation, including Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran and 4th District Congressman Mike Pompeo.

“The recent changes in our Congressional delegation make this trip all the more important for our community,” Mayor Brewer said. “It is essential to establish a cooperative relationship with our newly-elected members Sen. Moran and Congressman Pompeo, as well as maintaining our contacts with Sen. Roberts and his staff.”

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.

City Manager Robert Layton and Government Relations Manager Dale Goter will also accompany the Mayor and Council members.
