Children will work with clay, make working cameras

CityArts is hosting two Spring Break Art Days tomorrow and Wednesday for kids ages 6-15. Activities for the all-day camps were inspired by the outdoors and include a little bit of everything – painting, stained glass, drawing, pottery and photography. CityArts actually increased the size of its classes to meet the demand set by parents looking for a creative outlet for their children over spring break. A total of 80 children will be visiting CityArts over the two days. The media are invited to visit CityArts and cover all of the activity anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On Tuesday, the theme is “Spring into Spring. The focus will be on coil clay projects. The children will work with clay, metal, plastics, wire and stained glass to make bowls, tiles and sculptures.

On Wednesday, the theme is “Zoom,” and the day is all about photography! Kids will make their own pinhole cameras out of shoeboxes, load them with film and shoot their own pictures outside. In the afternoon, they will take the film they shot and develop it in a darkroom at CityArts.

Spring Break Art Days are the start of spring art classes at CityArts. The full adult and youth session starts the week of March 28. New offerings include Saturday youth classes and adult classes in filmmaking and stained glasses. There are also the favorites – painting, drawing, Web site design, digital photography and Photoshop – that appeal to most everyone. Registration is going on now at or by calling (316) 462-2787.
