Operation Prom Night Thursday

Contact: WFD Captain Jeff Toews |

Dramatization to depict a DUI car wreck

The Wichita Fire Department, Wichita Police Department, City of Wichita Central Maintenance Facility, Sedgwick County EMS, Cochran Mortuary, Wichita East High School, Don Schmidt Auto Salvage and other private businesses will participate in “Operation Prom Night.”

The annual event will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the southwest parking lot at Wichita East High School, 2301 E. Douglas. The dramatization will depict a vehicle DUI crash in a graphic display involving peer actors portraying drunk drivers, deceased students and critically injured “prom-goers.”

Students will see first-hand the results of a wreck caused by a drunk driver in an effort to encourage teens to avoid alcohol not only on prom night, but throughout the year. Attention will also be given to the dangers of driving while distracted by cellular phones and the dangers of not wearing seat belts.

Each year, many high school students are involved in debilitating and deadly car crashes. In order to curb this problem, government and private organizations are banding together to demonstrate the potentially fatal results of drinking and driving.

“If we can save one life, if we can help one person to make the right decision, then all the time, effort and energy are worth it.” Jeff Toews, a Wichita Fire Captain said.

Media are asked to park no later than 9:45 a.m. in the southwest parking lot of East High School.
