Two Escape East-side House Fire

Contact: Captain Stuart Bevis |

Two occupants escaped their home after discovering a fire that originated with a propane-fueled cooker. Fifteen units from the Wichita Fire Department responded to a house fire at 10:17 a.m. on Sunday at 9025 E. Windwood. Upon arrival, WFD crews encountered heavy fire at the rear of the house, spreading into the attic above the garage. The occupants reported they were in the basement when a “popping” noise alerted them and they discovered a light haze of smoke on the first floor. After further investigation, the male occupant went outside and observed the back of the residence on fire. He and his wife quickly exited the residence and called 911.

The Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire originated outside, at the rear of the home. The occupants reported they had been smoking a turkey in a propane-fueled cooker in the area where the fire originated. A failure of the propane supply and connection led to the fire, which spread to a nearby fence and then to the rear of the home. Fire damage was estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 loss to the contents.
