Discarded Cigarette Damages Wichita Apartment Building

A discarded cigarette ignited a fire on an apartment balcony and caused $325,000 in property damage on Monday night at Aragon Apartments, 8901 E. Harry. No injuries were reported.

Ten Wichita Fire Department (WFD) units responded to the apartment fire and encountered heavy fire in the living area of residence #405; the fire spread to two adjacent apartments.

The occupant reported having discarded a cigarette in a bottle left on the balcony of the apartment. Shortly after, he noticed the smell of smoke inside the residence and discovered fire on the balcony.

Fire damage was estimated at $300,000 to the structure and $25,000 loss to the contents.
