Wichita Housing Program Recognized Again

Homeownership plan claims second award

A City of Wichita housing program that turns renters into homeowners has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Door Knocker Award. The City’s Self-Sufficiency Through Homeownership program won honorable mention recognition for “reaching under-served populations.”

The program is a unique combination of two HUD-funded initiatives: the HOME 80 downpayment and closing cost assistance program, and the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher/Family Self-Sufficiency program. The Wichita program has created 53 new homeowners since 2002; 31 of them are completely “self-sufficient,” according to Mary K. Vaughn, the City’s Director of the Housing and Community Services Department, which administers the programs.

“We are in a perfect position of being able to match clients who want to become self-sufficient, with a path to homeownership”, said Vaughn. “National experts agree that homeownership enhances family stability, children’s academic achievement and long-term income growth.”

The honorable mention honor represents the program’s second national honor. Last Month, the Wichita program was recognized as the “Best of the Best” in balloting at a HUD Regional Spotlight on Excellence Conference in Independence, Mo.

“We are especially happy to have been recognized by our peers,” Vaughn said. “However, the real winners are the 53 families who are now enjoying the American dream.”
