Cowtown re-creating specific day in Wichita’s history

Cowtown is hosting a new event this Saturday that is sure to create a sense of déjà vu on the grounds. “Frozen in Time” will take place from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and all activities will mirror events that took place in Wichita on May 28 in the 1870s. Admission is $7.75 for adults; $6.50, senior citizens; $6, youth ages 12-17; and $5.50, children ages 4-11. Children under 4 and museum members are admitted free. Cowtown is located at 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

Cowtown staff carefully sifted through old editions of the Wichita City Eagle and the Wichita Daily Beacon to find out what happened in Wichita on that day. Events will be re-created down to the last detail, with the historical accuracy that only Cowtown can provide. The schedule of events includes: a wedding in the First Presbyterian Church; funeral in the Mortuary; dress fittings in the Dressmaking and Millinery Shop; pill rolling demonstrations in the Drug Store; a graduation in the One-Room Schoolhouse; and shaving demonstrations in the Barber Shop. A complete schedule of events and times can be found at

“We’re excited to let visitors observe and participate in a typical day in Wichita’s history,” said Cowtown Director David Flask. “People will come away with fun pieces of information. They may be surprised to learn that one Victorian dress required 23 measurements and that couples usually got married after church on Sundays because that is when they were dressed in their best clothing.”

During “Frozen in Time” Cowtown staff and volunteers – all dressed in Victorian-era attire – will stay in character from start to finish as they walk the grounds, staff the businesses, deliver ice to the General Store, operate the grain elevator and keep the peace by taking ornery cowboys to jail. Visitors are encouraged to interact with re-enactors who will be more than happy to fill them in on the latest town gossip, scandals and goings on.
