Lincoln Street Bridge Closes for Reconstruction

Contact: Gail Williams, Department of Public Works & Utilities |

Project includes new dam, with boat and fish passage.

The Lincoln Street Bridge will close to traffic on Monday. The bridge, located over the Arkansas River south of downtown, will remain closed until late 2012.

Traffic will be detoured using Harry Street, McLean Boulevard, and both Main and Market Streets.

Lowering of the river will also begin Monday and by Friday the river elevation will be at low flow. The river level will remain down until the 2012 Riverfest, when the new dam is expected to be operational.

Work to reconstruct the Lincoln Street Bridge and construct a new dam began March 14. The $13.7 million project is projected to be completed in late 2012. In addition to the bridge and dam, a boat and fish passage will be constructed, along with enhancements to the east bank of the Arkansas River.

The first phase of the project is construction of the east half of the new dam and bridge, new retaining walls and the boat/fish passage along the east bank of the river. The second phase will be construction of the west half of the new dam and bridge and partial reconstruction of the Lincoln and McLean Boulevard intersection.
