Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer has been hospitalized after experiencing chest pains on Tuesday, City of Wichita officials said.
Brewer, 54, is undergoing a routine medical evaluation at Via Christi Hospital at St. Francis. After experiencing chest pains at City Hall on Tuesday, Brewer made a visit to the St. Francis emergency room, at the request of his doctor. He was admitted later that evening.
Brewer is scheduled to remain at the hospital until Friday and return to his mayoral duties on Monday. He is serving his second term as Mayor, the top elected official of the seven-member Wichita City Council.
Council Member Janet Miller assumes the role as the city’s top elected official, according to a resolution that establishes succession in the event of the Mayor and Vice Mayor’s absence. Vice Mayor Lavonta Williams is attending a National League of Cities conference in Beaumont, Texas.
