Work affecting traffic at Northwest and Kapaun-Mt. Carmel.

Work is nearing completion on several street projects near Northwest High and Kapaun-Mt. Carmel schools and traffic will be affected for the first few days or weeks of the school year.

Northwest High School students arriving via 13th Street will be limited to one lane in each direction on Thursday and Friday, east of Tyler to Ridge Road. The resurfacing project will be completed in time for classes on Monday. Funding for this project became available in June, limiting the timeframe for it to be scheduled, bid, and constructed.

On 13th Street west of Tyler, extensive base repairs were needed before the new surface could be installed. This work is expected to complete by September 8.

Central is being widened between Rock Road and Webb, which includes the area in front of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School. Work began June 6, but complications in relocating a gas utility line delayed the project for several weeks. All five lanes are expected to be open to traffic by August 26. Until then, because traffic is limited to one lane in each direction, left turns into Kapaun –Mt. Carmel are discouraged.

“Street construction involves a lot of preparation and coordination with utilities, and when there are complications, it takes extra time,” Alan King, Director of Public Works & Utilities, said. “We try to avoid the affect on school traffic but that’s not always possible.”
