Solo exhibit features local teen inspired by Blackbear Bosin’s work
The Mid-America All-Indian Center is proud to introduce the community to Kineu Rutledge. Paintings and drawings by the 18-year-old artist will be on display Friday through Oct. 22 in the Indian Center’s Buffalo Room. An artist reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. The Indian Center is located at 650 N. Seneca. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
Rutledge, who attends Wichita Northeast Magnet School, is an emerging American Indian artist. The title of his exhibit, "Manidoo Waabiwin,” means Seeing through the Spirit in the Ojibwe language. Rutledge is a member of the White Earth Ojibwe Nation from Minnesota and the Meskwaki Nation of Iowa. His art instructors have compared his technique and style to early Blackbear Bosin, a widely respected artist who is best known in this area for creating the Keeper of the Plains statue.
Rutledge’s show will open on the same day the Indian Center is closing an exhibit of original artwork by Bosin. The timing is no coincidence.
“We booked these shows together to honor the work of a beloved American Indian artist who inspired the next generation of artists to continue his work and be proud of their culture,” said Indian Center Director April Scott.
