A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate park improvements is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at North Woodland Park, 841 W. 21st St. Scheduled attendees included Wichita City Council Member Janet Miller and other community leaders.

The park improvements include a new shelter, grill, six picnic tables, three park benches, 20 new trees and landscaping improvements. They were funded through a $42,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation and a $5,000 donation from the Kansas Chapter of AT&T Pioneers.

“The park improvements are a wonderful new community asset,” said Miller, whose Council district includes North Woodland Park. “This is a terrific example of how the public and private sectors can work together to help make Wichita a great place to live. We are so appreciative of the AT&T Pioneers’ generosity.”

North Woodland Park is one of 21 projects across the nation funded this year through the Pioneers Volunteer Community Grant Program, which commemorates the Pioneers’ 100th anniversary. Local Pioneer units were offered an opportunity to select a community organization or program to donate time and resources. North Woodland Park project received the largest single donation in North America.

The Park and Recreation Department supports nine recreation centers, 11 swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, five golf courses, eight interactive fountains, numerous adult and youth-based activities and athletics programs and 2,407 acres of rights-of-way.
