A regional Household Travel Survey was conducted by ETC Institute on behalf of The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO). WAMPO is the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the greater Wichita metropolitan area. The purpose of the survey was to gather data on travel patterns and transportation priorities for residents in the WAMPO region. The region includes all of Sedgwick County; extends into Butler County, including all of Andover; and extends into Sumner County, including all of Mulvane.

A total of 3,376 households (totaling 9,503 persons ages 5 to 98) participated in the survey which provided a statistically valid sample of the region with a precision of at least +/- 2% at the 95% level of confidence. The survey contains data that may be compiled by age, location, mode of travel and other factors.

The WAMPO region, at 9.33 trips per day (average), is significantly higher than the national average of 7.80 trips per day. The results of the survey show that ninety percent (90%) of the trips in the WAMPO region are made by people who drive or travel as passengers in a private vehicle. This is higher than the national average of eighty-seven percent (87%). Walking accounts for approximately three percent (3.4%) of trips; bicycle usage accounted for 0.4% and 0.9% of all trips were completed on public transportation.

The results of Household Travel Survey are now available in both hard copy and electronic format. An Executive Summary (see attached) is also available. Please contact Bill Christian at 316-268-4457 or BChristian@wichita.gov to request additional information on the Household Travel Survey.
