Red Cross Seeks to Help With Extended Recovery

Contact: James Williams, Wichita Red Cross |

The American Red Cross continues to adapt after an EF3 tornado destroyed parts of south Wichita and the Oaklawn area. Starting today, Red Cross is offering additional immediate needs to help affected families. From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Oaklawn Community Center, 2937 E. Oaklawn, Red Cross volunteers will be meeting with families to help plan their recovery.

“Now that Red Cross has provided immediate needs like shelter, food and water, it wants to extend the safety net for families who’ve lost everything,” said James Williams, Red Cross spokesperson. “Thanks to our generous supporters, the assistance Red Cross will start providing today will help them back into homes.”

Those who suffered damage are encouraged to visit the Oaklawn Community Center with a photo I.D. and a proof of address. Red Cross will compare their address to previously recorded damage by volunteers to determine how Red Cross can help. Red Cross will continue to provide outreach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Questions about recovery can be directed to (316) 219-4052.

Since the recovery started, Red Cross has:

  • utilized 31 Red Cross personnel;
  • provided 92 overnight stays in its shelter at 801 E. Market, Derby, Kan.;
  • given out 1,315 recovery items like hygiene products and clean-up supplies;
  • distributed 7,435 meals and snacks.

There are ways people can and cannot help. While well intended, in-kind donations of clothing, food, water or other supplies are not needed. Red Cross appreciates the offers of help, but right now the best way to help disaster victims is with a financial donation by visiting, by texting the word REDCROSS to 9-0-9-9-9 or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. While no blood drives have been canceled, Red Cross depends on generous volunteer blood donors to provide lifesaving blood in need – each and every day.

You may help people affected by disasters like tornadoes in the Wichita area as well as countless crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
