Name the Ponies Contest

Contact: Brian Hill, O.J. Watson Park Manager |

Wichita Park & Recreation is giving area youth the opportunity to name two new ponies housed at O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McClean Blvd. The naming contest starts this weekend and runs through Sunday, July 1.

Participants, ages 12 and under, must pick up a pony coloring sheet at the Watson Park concession stand or a City of Wichita recreation center. They must color the sheets and write the pony’s suggested name on the sheet. The completed coloring sheets must be returned to O.J. Watson Park or a Wichita recreation center by July 1.

Two winners will be selected by a panel of judges. Winners will be announced on July 6. Each winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Wal-Mart and will be photographed with the pony they named.

Watson Park has a stable of seven ponies, a popular attraction for children 12 and under. The park has been home to ponies for more than 30 years. Other park attractions include pedal boats, miniature golf and family fishing. To find out more about the naming contest or O.J. Watson Park, please visit and click on “Park & Recreation.”

Wichita Park & Recreation supports nine recreation centers, 9 swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, five golf courses, six interactive fountains, numerous adult and youth-based activities and athletics programs and 2,407 acres of rights-of-way.
