Douglas Block Garage Milestone

Contact: Communications Team |

Work of the public parking garage at the northwest corner of William and Topeka in downtown Wichita has reached a construction milestone today. Coreslab Structures, Inc., a subcontractor to the project’s general contractor Key Construction, began erecting the precast concrete components of the garage. Erecting the precast concrete components is expected to take about a month.

The parking garage is the City of Wichita’s first public parking project in support of Project Downtown, the master plan for downtown revitalization. The garage supports redevelopment of the historic Union National Bank building as the Ambassador Hotel, a 117-room boutique hotel; redevelopment of the former Henry’s Department Store building as offices, restaurant, and retail; and construction of the new Kansas Leadership Center and Kansas Health Foundation Conference Center. In addition to supporting an entire block of downtown revitalization, the garage will be open to the public and will support businesses on surrounding blocks as well as events at the Intrust Bank Arena and the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center. The garage also has more than 9,000 square feet for future retail development.

The construction budget for the parking garage is $6 million and is funded by the City of Wichita. The public-private partnership for revitalization of the Douglas Block also involves private investments totaling approximately $35-$40 million in the Ambassador Hotel, Henry’s building, and Kansas Leadership Center.
