Safe Steps to School program focuses on walking and bike safety

Wichita City Council Member Lavonta Williams and the Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) team will kick-off the “Safe Steps to School” program on Monday at Mueller Elementary, 2500 E. 18th Street.

During the event, Williams and community volunteers will educate children who are walking and riding bikes on how to cross the street, use signalized cross walks and take the safest routes to school at the corner of 21st & Erie, 21st & Hillside, 21st & Grove, or 19th & Grove. They will assist students from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13 and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

“I’m excited about this opportunity, because it connects local health advocates and our students to fulfill an everyday need in our community,” Williams said.

Safe Steps to School is sponsored by Pioneering Healthier Communities. The Wichita YMCA was one of six YMCA’s in the country to receive a PHC Health Equity grant which was used to help create the Wichita-PHC team, a subcommittee of the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita. The initiative is a community strategy to facilitate active living and healthier eating through policy and environmental changes.
