City officials on Thursday, June 27, launched details of a $1 million rebate program that provides financial incentives for residents who conserve water. The program, approved by the City Council on June 4, will start on Monday.

Qualifying devices or appliances purchased between May 1 and Dec. 31 this year are eligible for the rebates – until $1 million budget is exhausted.

A list of qualifying items is available at www.wichita.gov, including five devices and appliances. General guidelines and some eligible items are included below.

Eligible for up to a $100 rebate:

  • Low-flow toilets: 1.28 gallons or less per flush;
  • High-efficiency dishwashers: less than 4.25 gallons per cycle;
  • High-efficiency washing machines: Water factor of 4.5 or less;
  • Smart-irrigation controllers: labeled “WaterSense.”

Eligible for up to a $75 rebate:

  • Rain barrels: 50 gallons or larger

Rebates may not exceed the purchase price and a household cannot exceed using more than five rebates, which will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Rebates are available only to single-family, owner-occupied residences.

Only water customers who receive a bill directly from the Wichita Water Utilities are eligible for the program. The application and submittal instructions are available at www.wichita.gov. Customers are encouraged to contact the Water Conservation Office at 268-8351 or WaterRebate@wichita.gov for more information.
