Poster contest winner announced

City officials today unveiled the winning artwork for the 2013 Wichita Flight Festival poster contest. The first place entry titled “Flight over the Plains” was created by Wichitan Lacy N. Young. Her poster design will be used to promote the Wichita Flight Festival to local, regional and national audiences and be included on souvenir lapel pins. Young also received a $1,000 cash prize.

“We loved Lacy’s choice of colors and her unique interpretation of Wichita as the ‘Air Capital of the World,’ ” said John D’Angelo, manager of the City of Wichita’s Division of Arts & Cultural Services.

Young was one of three finalists in this year’s contest. Second place and a $500 cash prize was given to Sara Harmon of Bel Aire. Third place and $250 was awarded to Alan Brooks of Andover.

The Wichita Flight Festival is scheduled for Sept. 28-29 at Jabara Airport. The poster contest was added to the festival to help build momentum for the event. The souvenir lapel pins are another new addition. The $10 pins will not be required for entry into the Wichita Flight Festival, but rather a way for people to show their support for this long-standing event that honors and celebrates Wichita’s rich aviation heritage. An announcement will be made soon as to where the public can purchase the pins.

This year’s festival will include daytime aerial performances, a Kid’s Zone, static airplane displays, food concourse and vendor/education area. All daytime activities are free. Tickets for the Saturday night Twilight Air Show and Concert are on sale now at WichitaTIX.com or by calling 316-219-4849. Children age 11 and younger will be admitted free.

The headline act for the daytime and twilight air shows will be TORA TORA TORA, based out of Midland, Texas. TORA is the Commemorative Air Force's recreation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Saturday night concert will feature Hotel California – The Original Eagles Tribute Band.
