Film contest winner to be announced July 28

The Mid-America All-Indian Center will announce the first, second and third place winners of the American Indian Festival Film Contest and host a screening of all entries at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28. The public is invited to attend the free event and vote for their favorite to receive the Audience Choice Award. This is the first year that the Indian Center sponsored the contest with the Tallgrass Filmmakers Lab as its media partner. The Indian Center is located at 650 N. Seneca.

“Our goal was to see the American Indian Festival through the eyes of a diverse range of filmmakers,” said Indian Center Director April Scott. “With each person and story they captured on film, they will help us communicate the value and uniqueness of this cultural celebration to countless audiences as we begin to promote the 2014 American Indian Festival.”

Entries were judged by local American Indian filmmaker Rod Pocowatchit, Nick Pope, co-director of programming for the Tallgrass Film Association and representatives from the Indian Center. First place will receive a $500 cash prize; second place, $200 and a family membership to the Indian Center; and third place, a 2013 Tallgrass Film Festival TALLpass. Each of the winning filmmakers will receive a special invitation to the 2014 American Indian Festival Preview Party to introduce their films.

The contest was open to filmmakers of all ages. They were invited to create an 8-10 minute documentary-style film that best captured the spirit and excitement of the 3rd annual American Indian Festival, which was held July 13-14 at Century II Expo Hall.
