City Winter Storm Response

Contact: Ben Nelson, Department of Public Works & Utilities |
City of Wichita crews are applying a salt and sand mix to Wichita streets in advance of the forecasted winter storm, City officials said during a Thursday afternoon news briefing. Portions of the expressways and bridges are being treated now, in advance of rush-hour traffic.  Additional treatment will be applied throughout the day to other primary roadways.  Personnel will rotate on 8-12 hour shifts and will operate up to 50 trucks to treat the roads through the duration of the storm.
Precipitation is forecasted through part of the day on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.  Sleet accumulation is expected to be less than one inch.  The combination of ice and sleet may create hazardous driving conditions.
The City will monitor the weather and the road conditions through the evening and will provide updates as necessary.  The Wichita Police Department is urging motorists to use extreme caution when traveling during this winter storm. Following are WPD driving tips:
  • Plan extra time to reach your destination;
  • Keep your vehicle in proper working order;
  • Slow down in slick conditions, allow for extra stopping distance;
  • Clear windows and windshield of ice, snow and other obstructions;
  • And stay away from safety equipment on the roads.
