The Wichita Police and Public Works & Utilities departments are working together to reduce property thefts over the holiday season. Crews will be placing portable message signs, similar to construction zone signs, near east and west Wichita shopping areas. This is the seventh consecutive year WPD and public works staffers have placed the signs near busy shopping areas.
“We want people to use common sense,” said Lt. Wanda Parker-Givens. “Hide your items, take your keys, lock your vehicle. So many thefts can be prevented by following some simple steps.”
Beginning today, the flashing message boards will be in place on Rock Road near Towne East Square and on West Maple near Towne West Square. Later in December, the signs will be moved to other shopping areas in Wichita. The signs, which will operate 24-hours a day, will remain in place through December. The messages will remind shoppers to lock their cars and hide valuables.
