Wichita Fire Department officials say a fatal fire on Tuesday at 644 N. Goebel was not caused by a failure of the home’s electrical system. More details on the cause of the fire may be released early next week. Fire Investigators continue to collect additional information.
The official autopsy report from the coroner’s office is still pending; all four victims had elevated carbon monoxide levels consistent with smoke inhalation. No additional information will be available until early next week.
The WFD is providing free smoke alarms and batteries to home owners who do not have one, thanks to a partnership with the Safe Kids Coalition, Scholfield Automobile Dealerships and Interstate All-Pack Batteries. Firefighters will install them at no cost. Residents should call the WFD at 268-4441 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to set up an appointment. Firefighters will also test existing smoke alarms for residents. Most smoke alarms need to be replaced after 10 years of use.
