Part of Broadway near Mt. Vernon is temporarily closed after a water main burst and damaged the road earlier today, June 9, according to Public Works & Utilities officials.
The main break buckled pavement across all four lanes of Broadway, making the road impassible for vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic is diverted to neighboring streets while the affected section of Broadway remains closed.
Crews should have the pavement repaired and Broadway reopened as early as this weekend. Repairs to the water main are expected to be completed today.
Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid the Broadway and Mt. Vernon area until the road is reopened.
The Public Works’ Pavement Maintenance service maintains and repairs approximately 1,800 miles (more than 5,000 lane miles) of paved streets, 90 miles of dirt streets, 110 miles of alleys, 370 vehicular bridges and 35 pedestrian bridges within the city limits.
