Architects collecting input about convention/performing arts options
Planning and design options for the future of Wichita’s convention and performing arts facilities will be the focus of a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13 in Meeting Room 101 at the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center. Populous, the prime architectural team with offices in Kansas City, and architectural consultants GLMV of Wichita, will be gathering input from citizens. Century II is located at 225 W. Douglas.
The public meeting is the official start to Phase II of a project that started with a market assessment study of convention business in Wichita conducted by Convention Sports & Leisure International (CS&L). In October, the Go Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau released findings from that study that showed potential for convention growth assuming the city had industry-standard convention facilities. The companion market assessment for performing arts and entertainment will be initiated Jan. 9 by AMS Planning & Research for the Arts and Entertainment Industries (AMS) and its partner Fisher Dachs Associates (FDA). It is being funding through a partnership between the Arts Council, Go Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau, Music Theatre of Wichita and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and should be completed by early March.
The three scenarios outlined in the CS&L study will be explored further during the Jan. 13 meeting. Those scenarios are:
  1. Leave the convention center as is, deciding not to renovate or build new.
  2. New convention center with renovated Century II plus new Hyatt hotel rooms.
  3. New convention center and performing arts center with redeveloped Century II site and new Hyatt hotel rooms.
Populous and GLMV will collect public input as they develop facility concepts and budgets for the scenarios. Phase II is expected to be complete by June 2014. It will be followed by Phase III, which will be a cost/benefit analysis.
