Water Options to be Presented on Tuesday

Contact: Alan King, Department of Public Works & Utilities |
The Wichita City Council is scheduled to review options on water conservation and new supplies at a workshop on Tuesday at City Hall, 455 N. Main.  Public Works & Utilities officials will present strategies for ensuring a stable water supply through 2060.  Options include methods for reducing usage through a revamped conservation program, and adding new sources of water.
City officials will highlight the results from last year’s water conservation rebate program, as well as the water and cost savings from measures taken by the City to reduce its own water usage.  Future conservation options could include a modified rebate program, scholastic education, leak repair mailings, and studies about outdoor water conservation and re-use in industrial processes.
New supply sources will also be addressed.  Potential new sources could include water from El Dorado Lake, re-used effluent taken from bank storage wells in the river, optimization of existing facilities at the Aquifer Storage & Recovery system, or non-potable re-use of treated wastewater.
Results from last year’s community survey and the ACT-ICT citizen engagement process show that a stable water supply is the most important priority to Wichita residents. The proposals for water conservation and new sources are aimed at addressing this long-term priority of the community.
