Tree-planting event returns
Wichita Park and Recreation will host the 59th Annual Arbor Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 25 at Earhart Environmental Magnet, 4401 N. Arkansas. The celebration highlights the value trees provide to residents through a variety of educational activities and demonstrations.
“For decades, Wichitans have realized the importance of trees to our quality of life and, through good and bad economic times, we have ensured that our urban forest is renewed and maintained,” said Doug Kupper, Director of Park and Recreation. “As a result, Wichita has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 27 consecutive years.”
Demonstrations will feature proper tree planting techniques, tree maintenance activities using heavy forestry equipment, tree climbing and other educational activities. Earhart students and others will also help plant an honorary tree in recognition of Mrs. Anna Myers who has dedicated 18 years to Project Beauty and specifically to maintaining the landscaping on the Douglas median north of Century II.
“Planting the right tree in the right place is an important skill students can take with them when it comes time to plan their own yards,” said Don Sherman, Vice President of Customer and Community Relations for Westar Energy. “The City of Wichita and Westar Energy have joined efforts to improve Wichita’s urban forest as well as reduce the number of power outages.”
Other event partners include Wichita’s Project Beauty, Double Tree by Hilton at the Wichita Airport, Asplundh Tree Expert Co. and Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardeners. Wichita Park & Recreation supports 127 parks, eight recreation centers, nine swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, five golf courses, six interactive fountains, numerous adult and youth-based activities and athletics programs and 2,407 acres of rights-of-way.
