The City of Wichita is hosting a Wichita Transit
Free Fares Week, July 14-19, in order to improve air quality and increase bus ridership.
The benefits of Free Fares Week are cleaner air, reduced traffic and more bus riders. Vehicles contribute 47% of the area’s ozone-forming nitrogen oxide emissions. Every bus rider equals one less vehicle on the road, which reduces exhaust emissions that cause ozone. Ozone is a harmful air pollutant that can have health impacts for sensitive groups and individuals that spend large amounts of time outdoors.
Free bus rides will provide Wichitans with an opportunity to try out the city’s bus system to learn if regular or occasional rides will fit their transportation needs. Recent public engagement efforts indicate that residents are interested in a multimodal transportation system.
Additionally, a social media contest will accompany Free Fares Week. Take a "selfie on the Bus" on July 14-19 and post it on the Wichita Transit Facebook Page using #wichitatransitselfie and you could win one of eight $50 VISA gift cards in a drawing at the end of Free Fares Week.
