“Building a Better Future” sets stage for conversation

Residents can weigh in on a proposed sales tax and the 2015 Operating Budget at a final neighborhood meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, July 1, at Alford Library, 3447 S. Meridian.

The open-house style meeting is part of an initiative called “Building a Better Future: A Proposed Sales Tax.” The meeting will include a presentation and feedback session on the proposed city sales tax that, if taken to voters and approved, would help fund the following key community priorities:

  • A future water supply;
  • Jobs initiative;
  • Public Transit;
  • And pavement maintenance.

There have been five previous meetings, scheduled so residents can help shape the city’s future and set key priorities beyond 2015.

“Building a Better Future” attendees will hear an overview about the proposed sales tax, visit information stations and discuss specific plans for each community priority. They can ask questions and submit ideas in writing at the meeting or online at Activate Wichita ( The meetings will explain:

  • How the priorities were determined;
  • The impact on residents and the overall community;
  • And why now is the time to make decisions about basic services needed to keep the city viable and competitive.
