The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) will host its annual legislative forum from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the Central Library, 223 S. Main St.
Wichita City Council members are scheduled to attend to discuss issues affecting young people. The event is open to the public.
A light reception will be offered at 6 p.m., followed by the forum at 6:30 p.m. The event is coordinated by the MYC’s Legislative Affairs and Community Relations Committee, which has chosen to promote safe teen driving and voter registration during the 2014-2015 school year. Voter registration materials will be available at the event.
The MYC’s Prevention and Education Committee will also distribute drug abuse prevention information to promote National Drug Facts Week, Jan. 26-Feb. 1, which will be recognized by youth-focused organizations across the country and is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The MYC was established in 2007 by Mayor Carl Brewer to give local youth an opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about City government. The Council currently has 38 high school students from more than a dozen public, private, and home schools. Its other signature events include Junior Jumpstart and Youth Leaders Across Wichita (YLAW).
