Wichita City crews are assessing the damage from the storm that occurred overnight. The damage affected several departments including the Airport, Public Works & Utilities, Wichita Police, Wichita Park & Recreation and the Wichita Public Library. No major injuries have been reported. Information regarding damage estimates and outages will be provided as soon as those details become available.
The storm did significant damage at Jabara Airport, which remains closed while crews are removing debris from the runway. The Midwest Corporation hangar collapsed on top of six aircraft inside. No one was in the building at the time. Power and gas have been turned off while crews work to determine the extent of the damage. Jabara is expected to resume operations early this afternoon.
At Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the damage was minor. A few fence lines were knocked down and there is minimal debris. The new terminal, parking garage and rental facilities were not impacted.
Wichita Public Works & Utilities:
The storm caused minor problems for City Public Works & Utilities operations with some facility damage reported. However all critical systems are either operating normally, on backup power, or being operated to an acceptable level. Water quality has not been impacted. Crews are also working to address traffic signal outages throughout the city.
Wichita Park and Recreation
Forestry crews have cleared more than 25 street blockages. No significant damage was reported at the parks. However there are some areas where workers have placed caution tape around fallen trees and debris until they can be cleared. All parks will remain open today and throughout this weekend.
Wichita Public Library:
Two Wichita Public Library branches are closed due to power outages. They include the Comotara branch and the Angelou branch. The Rockwell branch located at 5939 E 9th St N, is open for customers who are affected by the closures.
The Patrol North Bureau also lost power. There have not been any reports of damage to patrol cars or Wichita Police Department facilities.
