Wichita's average airfares continue to remain competitive, thanks to the presence of discount carriers. Wichita’s airfares increased .5 percent to $392.71 from $390.83 in fourth quarter 2013, according the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. In contrast, the U.S. average domestic airfare increased 2 percent to $393 in the fourth quarter, up from $385 in 2013.
Wichita’s average airfares have dropped significantly since the inception of discount carriers in 2000. In fourth quarter 2000, Wichita's average airfare (adjusted for inflation) was $565.42, the 16th highest fare of the nation’’ top 100 airports. Wichita's fourth quarter 2014 is 30.5% less than in 2000, the 54th highest out of the nation’s top 100 airports.
Comparing average fares in the region, Tulsa and Oklahoma City have higher fares than Wichita; Kansas City's fare remains slightly less:
