Wichita Park & Recreation officials on Monday announced they were changing the name of the department’s mascot to Barry the Bison, effective immediately.
The mascot was introduced as Buddy the Bison in late April, but officials were later notified that Buddy the Bison has an existing trademark. Troy Houtman, the Director of Park & Recreation, said the name was changed to avoid trademark infringement.
The department identified a mascot as a way to raise awareness about the benefits of outdoor recreation and promote Park & Recreation events. Barry the Bison will make appearances at events, sports, games, and other occasions. He will be an advocate of Wichita’s extensive park system and recreational opportunities.
