Wichita City Manager Robert Layton released the 2016-17 Proposed Budget during today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting. Residents are encouraged to visit to review the proposed budget.

In keeping with City Council policies, the 2016 Proposed Budget:

  • Maintains a stable mill levy rate, for the 22nd consecutive year;
  • Includes reserves of more than $26.9 million; and
  • Continues an emphasis on strategic priorities.

At the direction of City Council, Layton worked with Department of Finance staffers and employees across the organization to focus on strategic priorities. Those priorities include public safety, implementation of body-worn cameras, enhanced forestry efforts, street and bikeway maintenance, addressing illegal dumping and funding of Transit services. The 2016 Proposed Budget is balanced and continues to serve as a foundation for the future.

Community engagement again played a key role in the development of the budget. Neighborhood meetings in conjunction with District Advisory Boards meetings were held in each Council district. Discussions with other community groups as well as City employees were held. Two social media events on Facebook and Twitter generated more than 1,000 comments.

Residents are invited to participate in public hearings scheduled for Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. The City Council will take final action to adopt the budget on Aug. 11.
