City Crews Treating Streets

Contact: Alan King, Department of Public Works & Utilities |

City of Wichita crews were mobilized at 10 p.m. Monday, in advance of winter precipitation.  Crews have been applying a salt-sand mix to emergency routes.  The salt-sand mix melts accumulating precipitation and provides traction on driving surfaces.  Crews treat more than 1,500 lane miles of emergency routes during winter storm events.

Public Works & Utilities crews are working around the clock on 12-hour shifts, operating 60 trucks to treat roads through the duration of the storm.

Weather and road conditions will be monitored continuously.  Motorists are urged to proceed with caution and follow the following safe driving tips:

  • Plan extra time to reach your destination;

  • Keep your vehicle in proper working order;

  • Reduce speeds in slick conditions, allowing for extra stopping distance;

  • Clear windows and windshield of ice, snow and other obstructions; and

  • Stay away from safety equipment on the roads.
