The Wichita Public Library and its community partners are excited to announce that The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is the 2022 NEA Big Read: Wichita book selection. The Big Read will take place February 12-March 27, 2022.
The National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest granted the Library a $20,000 grant to host the next installment of the NEA Big Read: Wichita. This will be the 14th year the Library and community partners have presented this program in Wichita.
The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. The story of Esperanza’s childhood is told through a series of heartbreaking and joyous vignettes and discusses childhood and self-discovery.
“We are excited to select The House on Mango Street for many reasons,” said Julie Sherwood, Education and Engagement Manager for the Wichita Public Library. “We are able to explore race, diversity and inclusion through this book, and are proud to present some of the Big Read in both English and Spanish for the first time.”
For this year’s event, mama.film will present a weekend-long film festival discussing women’s roles in society, author Sarah Smarsh will host an author talk focused on her book Heartland about growing up in poverty, and Kansas Poet Laureate Huascar Medina will present a reading of “Un Mango Grows in Kansas” with a discussion on identity and location.
The NEA Big Read: Wichita brings together area schools, libraries, cultural organizations, businesses and book clubs to celebrate literacy and learning through reading a common book. More information can be found online at www.bigreadwichita.org.

La biblioteca pública de Wichita y sus colaborativos comunitarios se complacen en anunciar que La Casa en Mango Street de Sandra Cisneros es la selección para el NEA Big Read: Wichita del 2022. El Big Read sucederá el 12 de febrero hasta el 27 de marzo del 2022.

La Casa en Mango Street cuenta la historia de Esperanza Cordero, una joven latina que creció en Chicago, inventándose para sí misma en quién y en qué se convertirá. La historia de la infancia de Esperanza es contada en una serie de viñetas, a veces desgarradoras, a veces profundamente gozosas, y discute la infancia y el autodescubrimiento.
"Estamos muy contentos de seleccionar La Casa en Mango Street por muchas razones", dijo Julie Sherwood, gerente de participación de la biblioteca pública de Wichita. “Podemos explorar la raza, la diversidad y la inclusión a través de este libro, y estamos orgullosos de presentar parte del Big Read tanto en inglés como en español por primera vez”.
