After announcing a temporary processing problem at Wastewater Plant 2 at 57th Street South and Hydraulic, city crews worked through the weekend to mitigate odors. Odor mitigation efforts so far appear successful.
Crews processed 20 tankers of treated bio solids over the weekend, adding chemical suppressants and lime to help reduce odors. Sewage treatment staff received no odor complaints over the weekend.
City wastewater crews monitored the area surrounding the wastewater plant and did not notice increased odors.
Staff is taking steps to bring in extra equipment to expedite the processing and abate the odor as much as possible with the application of lime and other odor control chemicals. There are no mechanical issues with the plant.
The cause of the change in treatment process is being investigated but initial findings suggest operator error. The wastewater treatment plant is in compliance with all discharge requirements and is being closely monitored.
Again, there is no danger to the community or health impacts anticipated. City staff anticipate fixing the process within two weeks and progress is already underway.
