Update on Odor at City of Wichita Wastewater Plant 2

Contact: City Communications |

After announcing a temporary processing problem at Wastewater Plant 2 at 57th Street South and Hydraulic, city crews continue to work on odor mitigation. The treatment process is now stabilized. All of the odiferous biosiolids have been removed from the treatment process and are staged at the plant for hauling and disposal.

Chemical odor suppressant applications to the biosolids have been increased to help control odors, especially ahead of warmer anticipated weather. City staff will continue chemical applications during the loading and hauling process to minimize odors from being released.

Staff expects all of the staged biosolids to be hauled offsite by early next week. The biosolids will be utilized for agricultural purposes, which is the routine process for disposal of the plant’s biosolids.

The wastewater treatment plant continues to be in compliance with all discharge requirements and is being closely monitored.

There is no danger to the community or health impacts anticipated and the city does not expect any permit violations.
